Joe Ingles is an Australian pro basketball player who currently plays small forward for the Utah Jazz. He was born October 2, 1987, in Adelaide, Australia, the southern part of the country. He began his pro basketball career as a teenager in 2006, playing in Australia, Spain, and Israel. In 2014, Ingles got an opportunity to play in the NBA. He participated in the preseason with the Los Angeles Clippers before being waived and picked up by the Utah Jazz. He made a positive impression with the Jazz, who signed him to a multi-year contract the following offseason.
Ingles continued to carve out a bigger role for himself, becoming a full-time member of Utah’s starting lineup during the 2017-18 season. During the 2018-19 season, Ingles averaged a career-high 12.1 points and 5.7 assists per game. However, those numbers started to drop during the 2019-20 season before the season was suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic. Ingles has also participated in several international competitions while representing Australia, including the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Olympics
Joe Ingles was born in Adelaide, Australia, and grew up in a nearby suburb called Happy Valley. At age 17, Ingles completed his training at the Australian Institute of Sport and was a sought-after player. However, he declined an offer from his hometown team, the Adelaide 36ers. Instead, Ingles signed with the South Dragons, a Melbourne-based team in the National Basketball League, which is made up of teams from Australia and New Zealand.
In his first pro game, Ingles scored 29 points, the most in NBL history for an Australian player in his debut. He went on to win NBL Rookie of the Year honors in 2007. In 2009, Ingles was an all-NBL Third-Team selection while helping the South Dragons win the NBL championship.
Ingles spent the 2009-10 season with CB Granada in Liga ACB in Spain. The following summer, he transferred to FC Barcelona, where he played three seasons. In his three seasons with Barcelona, Ingles helped the team win two Liga ACB titles, two Spanish Supercup championships, and one Catalan League championship. Ingles spent the 2014 preseason with the Los Angeles Clippers, only to be waived before the start of the regular season. However, the Utah Jazz soon picked him up and gave him a chance to play. Ingles played in 79 games, including 32 starts, for the Jazz during the 2014-15 season. Despite averaging just five points per game, it was enough to earn him a two-year contract with the Jazz.
Ingles spent those two seasons being a role player for Utah, primarily coming off the bench. However, he did play a role in helping the Jazz reach the playoffs in 2017. That summer, Ingles signed a four-year, $54 million deal to remain in Utah. The following season, he became a full-time starter, averaging 11.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game. He topped that during the 2018-19 season, starting all 82 games while averaging 12.1 points and 5.7 assists per game.
Prior to the 2019-20 season, Ingles had made roughly $30.9 million from his salary during his NBA career. The four-year, $54 million deal he signed with Utah in 2017 gave him a substantial increase in his annual salary
